Within the years of 1914 -1918, Europe went into a four year long war with itself. This war was called World War I, originally called the Great War and it was a struggle fighting along the Western and Eastern Fronts. Two incredibly powerful alliances had participated in this four year long war. Those alliances were the Triple Entente and the Triple Alliance. Italy, Germany, Austria-Hungary, France, United Kingdom, and Russia were all in World War I in the beginning. Although this war was inevitable, these alliances were the underlying cause to the infamous World War I. The Great War was fought between the Allied Powers and the Central Powers. This was all due to one cause that is mostly overlooked due to the many other causes known as Imperialism, Nationalism, Militarism, and many others. This underlying cause was the many alliances within the countries in Europe. The alliances were a pro, but also con for Europe. The alliances caused stronger bonds between the partnering countries, but this caused rivalry and tension between the rivaling alliances. The alliances before World War I were the Triple Entente and the Triple Alliance. Within Document B, it displays a dead body/statue known as the “Peace of Europe” which someone has killed/destroyed. The various soldiers who represent the fighting countries are shown blaming or pointing at others to blame who broke the peace and most blame Germany. Another example within Document B, the many countries that blame Germany are against Germany in the war and this forces the other members of the Triple Alliance to help and defend Germany as an alliance. If only one member of that alliance gets into a war, the other members must help that country fight in the war. Knowing that, alliances tend to cause stronger bonds, it’s also a curse as it makes wars and situations worse than it already
