Conventional Meets Interesting Gryphons, or griffons, are mythological creatures with the head and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion. The new substitute teacher talks about these in the short story “Gryphon” written by Charles Baxter. This new substitute teacher comes in and disregards everything that the class had learned and done before that. Within the few days that she is there, she goes on to tell the class wild things about mythological creatures and angles that she claimed to have seen which made me think that she was kind of crazy. My Overall response was, like the narrator, intrigue.…

I think Walter Fane is innocent because of his mother’s descriptions of him and the pleasantness he shows to Gwenda. Mothers usually know their children very well, and I would be surprised if Mrs. Fane really didn’t know her son that well. Additionally, there is only one instance in which he showed violence and a crazy temper. This was when his brother broke something he had worked so hard for. Walter was clearly very attached to Helen, and she broke his heart twice, but according to Mrs. Fane, Walter had wonderful self control, making it improbable that Walter would murder someone.…

Evil is understood as the force in nature that oversees and provides a rise to wickedness. Evil is a very difficult subject that many consider displeasing, however, evidence from the stories, “ Young Goodman Brown,”,“ The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” and, “ The Devil and Tom Walker,” shows that evil does exist; and has existed since the beginning of time. By reading these three stories the themes of Good vs Evil, “Young Goodman Brown,” greed and gluttony in, “ The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” and moral decay in, “ The Devil and Tom Walker,” become quite apparent. If all these themes are put together, it shows that there is great evil in each and every human heart. In the tale, “ Young Goodman Brown,” Brown is representing the common man who is struggling in the fight good against evil, which he portrays by venturing into the forest in the dead of night ( the forest generally representing wickedness), and discovering things that are suddenly shown or understood in reality that all must eventually face— that there is sin within the world and nobody is perfect.…

In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, written by Mark Twain, Huck’s journey down the river with Jim helps to develop the idea of how society can affect how a person think and act a certain way. The development of an abnormal relationship between Huck, a white boy, and Jim, a slave, can be seen throughout the journey. The idea of mob mentality presented in several situations that Huck encountered on his journey further contributes to the theme. Also, the struggle between doing something that’s right versus doing something morally correct can be impacted by society as seen through Huck.…

Good stories leave room for interpretation within their woven plots and characters; Good writers allow for these interpretations flourish and reveal themselves to the audience. Just like in our own lives, stories aren’t always so cut and dry. There are ideas and situations that are both morally and factually gray, things we aren’t so sure about one way or the other. One particular author who hones in on looking at the lines between good and evil is Nathaniel Hawthorne. Hawthorne uses very lengthy descriptions of drab and gloomy imagery as he dissects ideas such as guilt, sin, and morality within his works.…
