Why Was The Suleyman Empire Successful

The Ottoman Empire was extremely diverse, both ethnically, religiously, and culturally. This was because the Ottoman Empire although originated from Turkey, expanded its territory in Europe and other parts of the Middle East. So religious were the Ottomans that the majority of the empire were not Muslims, but instead Christians. There were many rulers, or Sultans, of the Ottoman Empire, but the Sultan who was the most tolerant and successful was Sultan Suleyman I, also know as Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent. He was successful in many ways, including in cultural ways and in trade and commerce. However, what made him the most unique and the greatest sultan was the fact that he was the most tolerant, and he passed many laws, or kanuns, and did …show more content…
Trade and commerce was extremely important for the empire as they could get resources that they had not had before. Some of these resources included furs, timber, and grain. Also, the Ottomans gained a massive amount of wealth from trade, as they placed taxes on the goods coming in. This helped the empire financially. The Ottomans under Suleyman the Magnificent were also able to import goods within the country such as cheese, salt, sugar, and different spices. These imports helped all the inhabitants all around the Ottoman empire gain resources. The reason that this trade and commerce was so successful was because of the government and because of Suleyman the Magnificent. Suleyman the Magnificent passed kanuns to help protect traders from thieves using his soldiers. He also used his soldiers to protect ports from invaders or pirates, thus protecting merchants and traders from other countries. Because of all these actions that Suleyman the Magnificent took to protect trade and commerce, trade was extremely safe to carry out in the Ottoman empire, and many groups of people came from other countries to trade. The way trade worked was that the group of people, called a guild, would send its leader to trade with the other people in the city the guild was in. The government helped the locals in this process by sending soldiers to make sure nothing was overcharged. They would soon reach an agreement and hence, the trade would be completed. One of the biggest and most famous places for trade in the Ottoman Empire was the Grand Bazaar. Many merchants and traders came from around the world to trade in the Grand Bazaar, and it was so big that the Ottomans did not have enough soldiers to help protect it, and so they made a gate with a roof to help make sure who was coming in and going out.
