Why Martin De Leon Was Important to Texas Martin De Leon was born in 1765 in the town of Nuevo Santander[Roell]. His parents were Bernardo and María Galván De León. They immigrated from Burgos, Spain. The family was educated and were taught in Paris and had a lot of money.Martin's father asked him if we wanted to complete his education in Monterey and Europe.Martin denied. Martin's first job was as a muleteer which is a person who train mules or move supplies. De Leon also worked for the mine under Real de San Nicolás as a supplier. Martin joined the Spain army in 1790. His job was to protect settlers from any harm. The regiments name was Fieles de Burgos regiment which was under control by Mexican viceroy Juan Vicente Guernes Pacheco. The …show more content…
She came from a very rich family and got married in 1795. After that the two went to go settle in Cruillas, Nuevo Santander where they began to ranch. Later though in 1805 De Leon decided to settle in Texas by Chiltipin Creek and the Aransas River. In 1807 De Leon petitioned Manuel Maria de Salcedo to establish a colony in his vicinity. The petition was denied the first time and the second time in 1809. As a result though the people heard rumors that Martin was not loyal to Spain. De Leon then made a new ranch near the Nueces River. By then he moved several animals to New Orleans and became one of the first trail driver in Texas. In 1810 Father Miguel Hidalgo uprisings started so the Texas garrisons were moved. Native tribes were in the area now so Martin and his family moved to San Antonio. But in 1816 he moved back to his ranch which was numbering 5000 at head cattle. With Mexico now independent from Spain, there were more open land grants so De leo petitioned to settle 41 families near lower Guadalupe and founded the town of Nuestra Señora Guadalupe de Jesús Victoria. It was approved on April 13. His colony was the only predominantly Mexican colony in Texas. De Leon was able to ride a horse and was an excellent fighter and was referred to as Captain Plenty of Cows. His ranch which was 22,140 acres may have contained. La Salleqv's Fort St. Louis.
