The U.S. suffered many casualties in the attack of Pearl Harbor. Japan targeted and took out power stations, oil farms, and facilities where U.S. troops are stationed at the time. 18 American ships were sunk or damaged and the U.S. only managed to spare 2 aircraft carriers. In order for this attack to work, the Japanese had to be very careful. In sum, 68 American citizens were recorded dead along with 4,575 military casualties with 2,403 deaths. Very shortly after the attack, the U.S. declared war on Japan. Japan knew that there would be huge consequences for attacking the United States, but Japan did it anyways. After carrying through the attack against the U.S., Japan forced the most powerful military in the world target Japanese as enemies.
