The majority of white men saw the people as dark skinned moon eyed savages. Nativism plays a huge role with immigration in this time period. If you didn’t worship the same religion as we did or didn’t hale from the same region of Europe America didn’t want you. We did the same thing with the Chinese, southern Europeans, Mexicans and Blacks. Going back to the Philippians why would America want to take these people under the eagles’ wing voluntarily? Like others thought before it would be a great economic strong hold and the fear of losing it to another country. Before we could annex the area a war broke out between rebel fighters and American troops. The war between the rebels and the Americans lasted a good while with heavy losses on both sides. After the capture of the Filipino leader Aguinaldo, Roosevelt declared the war over and America so to speak just supervised over the country. Later we granted the Philippians independence in the
