Why was it necessary to intervene in the situation?
On patrol as a special constable, there was an urgent report over the radio of a male that had been seen with a handgun. A description of the male was given and a direction of travel, which was the area I was patrolling. On patrol I saw a male matching the description and informed the control room straight away. One of the main things that were effective about how I took control of the situation was being able to make use of firearms officers as they were able to approach and deal with the male quickly, safety and effectively preventing members of the public coming to harm. I gave good and clear commentary that could be transmitted to other officers so we were able to cordon off the correct areas and allow firearm officers to set up how they needed to.

What difficulties did you experience and how did you overcome them?
Difficulties that I faced in this situation were trying to prevent people from going into the cordoned area as there were a number of different ways they could enter. The area was next to a bus station on a Saturday evening in the town centre so there were a large number of people around. I overcame this by putting up police tape preventing the public from entering the cordon area. Standing in an area where I was safe I could still see the way the public could enter and then inform them of alternative routes they could take.
