Assignment #13 - What Did We Actually Win To begin, while it is clear that the US in particular won in the Cold War, it is very unclear what we actually won other than the collapse of the Soviet Union. As we have demonstrated in past weeks, the outcome of the war boiled down to a matter of economic might vs military might. The Soviet Union, while militarily sound, was unable to compete with the cost of war and inevitably collapsed. However, following the war, it is apparent that we have suffered substantial losses as well.…

The 2000 Presidential race all came down to sunshine state of Florida. The sate of Florida had to do an recount of the votes and shows that George W. Bush would have won the recount with the under-votes. Under-votes are votes that were not counted or used when calculating the presidential race. The dispute between presidential candidates George W. Bush and Al Gore in the 2000 presidential election made the American population aware of the legitimacy of elections. Additionally, this event illustrated how deeply divided the nation truly is. The debate focused on the state of Florida where there was conflict regarding Bush’s 2,909,135 votes and Al Gore’s 2,907,351 votes [1]. The difference is a staggering 1,784 or about .03% [1]. Have you ever wondered if the 2000 presidential election was fair? Well many people have wondered what would have happened if there had been a recount. This election was won off the fact that the US Supreme Court ruled in favor of George Bush. This meant the recount was called off and George Bush won the 2000 presidential election. The US Supreme Court made the wrong decision because there is a standard for recount, they didn’t count all of the votes that were placed and not every person was treated equally.…

The 2000 election was a nail biter to say the least. With the deciding factor of who the next president of our country would be coming down to a slim margin, tensions rose between the Republican and Democratic candidates. The accuracy of the votes were questioned by the Democratic Party leading to a series of lawsuit filed in need for a complete recount, due to some flaws in the election system, to be completely sure that Bush won the election. In doing so, this made the politicians have to reexamine their voting system and by doing so, brought up problems such as the, “hanging or dimpled chads”, which is a vote that has not been completely pressed in by mainly older voters, causing controversy in Palm Beach, Florida. These “Chad” votes…

In the 2000 Presidential Race, controversy in Florida between Gore and Bush started many protest and questioned how legitimate the election results were. Personally I believe the election was not legitimate for many reasons. With Bush recording 2,909,135 votes and Gore recording 2,907,351 votes the difference between the two is only 1,784. Not only is this a close number but this was before the machine recount which closed the gap to a 324 vote difference.…

This is the country where I am from, so I can say a lot about it. The president of the country Alexander Lukashenko is in power for 22 years already. He became a president through the process of elections that were fair and free enough in 1994. I think he was just lucky in some way at those elections. It was three candidates: the first candidate was the previous leader Kebich (Communist party), the other one was a leader of the opposition and the oppositional Belarus People’s Front Party Zyanon Paznyak (he was mainly a representative of intelligentsia), and Lukashenko was the third candidate.…
