Veteran: a person who has served in the military. That’s the definition that Google gives you when you type it in, but to me a veteran is more than that. I come from a military family. Words like loyalty and respect are commonly used in my home especially when it comes to describing my father and my grandfather, both veterans who have given up their time to serve this nation. Due to my father serving overseas, I know how it feels to wake up in the morning, walk down the hall, and expect to see a warm smile welcoming you to the kitchen, but instead find that it is not there. The smile is in Afghanistan, 7,000 miles away. I know what it feels like to welcome your parent home after a year of being separated from them. I’ve done it more than once.

Their service has changed them, but they have served their country and most of them would do it again if they could. Veterans are the embodiment of respect and disciple. They have risked their lives to protect their friends and families. When asked the importance of veterans, I cannot help but think, “Do veterans feel that they are important?” I first thought of my grandfather, a veteran of the Vietnam War and one of the kindest people on this planet, when I was given this topic. I wondered if he felt that he was important, but I didn’t have to wonder if he felt that other veterans were important. Any time he sees another soldier, it does not matter where we are, he will walk up and thank them for their service. He does this because he understands their importance and what it feels like to be unappreciated. When he returned from Vietnam, he was spit on and had things, such as glass bottles, thrown at him. Despite the things he and his unit did, like saving forty men from a POW camp, people still hated him. He makes sure that the soldiers nowadays know that they are appreciated and are important. He believes strongly that veterans are important because it was soldiers who fought to free the American colonies from Great
