Why Utilitarianism Is Ethical Philosophy Essay example
In this question I will focus on two major schools of thought; libertarianism and utilitarian.
Utilitarianism is one of the many schools of thought, and it gives us insight into what is ethically right or wrong. Utilitarianism is an ethical philosophy in which happiness for the greatest number of people in society is considered the greatest good. An action is morally right if it benefits the majority and minimizes pain. Just like every school of thought in western philosophy, it has strengths and weakness.
First benefit of utilitarianism is that it straightforward and is based on the single principle of minimizing pain and maximizing pleasure and happiness which is attractive to humans who have been conditioned from an early age to abstain from activities that cause pain (for example fire). Utilitarianism does not require individuals to hold any religious beliefs before accepting this worldview, therefore, it can be widely used by individuals from different cultures, religions etc. Additionally, utilitarianism helps us look beyond our personal point of view because it gives the perspective of standing in someone else’s shoes because we consider other peoples’ interests and preferences.
