The article "Why treat university students like fragile flowers?" was written by Margaret Wente and published in The Globe and Mail on September 19, 2017. In this article, Wente differentiates the difference between the treatment of institutions in the present than the past few years. Colleges and Universities considered mental health issues as part of a student's disability. It is because there is a significant increase in the anguish of students. Through this notion, students who are experiencing social and cognitive issues, such as anxiety and depression, are given an opportunity to extend deadlines at own pace. However, Bruce Pardy, a law professor at Queen's University, disagree with this system as it denies the learning ability to face such problems in a time-related manner. Wente used her past experiences to contrast the teaching style in the past and present. Thus, her purpose of the article is for everyone to be aware how every college, and universities treat their students and their mental health. Moreover, her approach in doing this is to place two different opinions for the reader's chance to understand both sides. Furthermore, her audience is more focused toward the institutions. She said that "…we are socializing adults for fragility, not resilience." (Wente, 2017, para. 9) In this statement, Wente points out how the training-ground for students are teaching them on how they should not tolerate any undesirable experiences, but to accept them and let them in "to the cuddly room to kiss the puppy and make it better." (Wente, 2017, para. 9) However, they should teach them in how they should cope with their sentiments, as most people do in real life.
