In his essay, José Muñoz first describes the affective mood of depression in relation to people of color, by illustrating Bustamante’s video, Neapolitan. From my perspective, the repeated video that displays a Hispanic woman sobbing while watching a film, portrays how minorities can feel out of place with the normal conventions expressed by “white” Americans. Muñoz argues that race, is defined as performativity; how someone acts brown or white. The “feelings of brown,” may suggest that Latin Americans may struggle to perform similarly as their non-colored peers. Hence, as Munoz said, “Feeling brown in my analysis is descriptive of the ways in which minoritarian affect is always...partially illegible in relation to the normative affect performed by normative citizen subjects.”…

This is effective because it causes the readers to wonder what would be their feelings if they are in those circumstances. One example of this is the photograph “Girl with Dunce Cap, New York City, 1972” (85), a photo of a girl sits with a dunce cap over her head, in a classroom. A girl who is punished by her teacher because she did not do her homework might be seem to be normal for some people, but her feeling might be full of shame and loneliness. Another example is the photograph “Young Boy and Hooded Figure, New York City, 1971” (84), a photo of a boy who is covered by a hooded figure behind him. Other than the objects shown in the photo, there might be many other stories, such as the boy is kidnapped by the hooded figure, or the hooded figure is a representationive of the death, taking the boy’s life away.…

My “Where I’m From Poem” demonstrates who I am, and my identity. Each line of the poem reveals another aspect of my identity, and opens up to who I am even more. The whole poem is a metaphor of my identity, which is based on my inner and outer self. For example, in line six I state: “I am from the tropical beaches”. This is a metaphor because I was not actually born on the beach, but instead, is something that makes me who I am.…

In John Berger’s book Understanding a Photograph, he argues that there is a distinct discontinuity between an individual viewing a photo, and the actual photo. A picture solely preserves a single moment in time, and while they often act to tell a story, the medium cannot be fully interpreted without knowing the story that surrounds it. Although there is a definite connection between a photograph and the narrative that corresponds with it, the photo is only a visual aid for the story; it does not tell us everything like the written piece does. I agree with Berger’s argument that photographs can shape the written story that is told about a single character through invoking various responses, emotions, feelings, and interpretations between the…

In 2015 the company BIC produced an advert in celebration of Women’s Day but the advert was criticized for its ‘sexism’ and ‘patriarchal belief’.
