Literacy is very, very important in society, it helps when we need to learn, or when we want to have fun! There are so many types of freedoms that we take for granted such as; ability to read, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, etc. We don't have to get beaten mercilessly if learn to read (slaves were forbidden to learn to read or write). Slaves had to be brave when working, or fighting for their freedom. It took a lot of bravery for slaves to learn to read, they would be beaten mercilessly.
