Why The Ocean Is Bad Essay

Decent Essays
The world is good, but contains bad. There needs to be a balance, a ying and yang, of the good and the bad in the world. “You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is like an ocean, if a few drops in the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty”(Ghandi). By using the literary device, simile, the author was able to show a comparison using the word “like” to express that the ocean is like humanity. Although there is dirt in the ocean, it doesn't make the ocean dirty as a whole. Gandhi was expressing that there will always be some good in the world, and that there also will be bad.

Similes strongly engage on the readers understanding on how the author wants to compare and contrast between two objects. For example, “ rain might start falling inadvertently as if still thinking of a plant as some kind of flower” (Dransfield, lines 18-20). Likewise, the Earth sees the plant just like how an adult sees their own child, they want to see them grow and develop in a positive manner.…

He describes the sea “like white flames” (Crane 32) which swarmed onto the boat. This simile emphasizes how nature is untamable by man just as the flames of a fire are difficult for a man to control. This simile presents an immense amount of power to nature which creates the idea that nature is violent, unmanageable, unforgiving. This supports the Naturalist view that nature is indifferent towards man. Crane describes the captain and his chuckle as “express[ing} humor, contempt, tragedy, all in one” (31).…

An extreme environment is a place where humans normally do not live or could die there. There are organisms caused extremophiles that live there and are so well-adapted that they readily grow and multiply in order to survive.
