The fictional character Elleanor Anne Arroway, from the film “Contact,” had many reasons why she did not believe in god. She lost her parents at a young age, she was inquisitive, and there is how insane religion or religious people can be. The first of which would be her mother dying during her birth. Adding to that, her father, whom she was very close with, also died when she was around nine years old. So, the two people that were supposed to love and care for her no matter what happened were taken from her before she even reached the age of reason. One could see why that would make her believe that there was not a god. How could a kind and loving god take not only the people who would support and nurture her, but do it at so young of an age? God is supposed to make someone feel connected to everyone and everything. As a child in Sunday school she would ask the youth leader questions, and expected solid answers. Yet as anyone who has studied religion knows, there are no solid answers in religion. Nor is there a unifying theory. The bible is filled with “special circumstances” that apply only to that part or book of the bible. For example, In Leviticus it states that necromancy was forbidden, yet Elijah, Elisha, Jesus, Peter, and Paul all raised people from the dead. So, the bible stated do not practice necromancy, but some of the biggest heroes/role models of the bible broke that commandment. What must have been most confusing to a child is the fact that not only were they not punished for their crimes, but they were looked on as great profits.
