Personal Care Products Safety Act

Improved Essays
There are many reasons why the cosmetic industry has become a concern for the people of the United States. Many people have had diseases and cancers that can be linked to the chemicals that are placed in their personal care products and cosmetics. Little has been done for putting regulations on these chemicals being placed in personal care products until recently with the Personal Care Products Safety Act. The chemicals that are being put into cosmetics are affecting every person who uses any type of personal care product without that person even knowing it.
Since the “1938 Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act” (Dahl) the FDA has not set any regulations on the chemicals that can be used in cosmetics. According to the FDA only eleven chemicals have

One step that lawmakers have recently introduced is the Personal Care Products Safety Act. According to Congress.gov, the bill would require the FDA to “develop and implement cosmetic manufacturing standards that are consistent with existing national and international standards, be allowed to inspect a company 's cosmetic safety records, recall a cosmetic that is likely to cause serious adverse health consequences, and encourage cosmetic safety testing practices that minimize the use of animals.” With small steps like the passing of this bill could make a significant difference in the way the cosmetic industry would operate. Unfortunately the bill only been introduced and has not been passed yet by the Senate. The bill would allow the FDA to have more control of the overseeing of chemicals being placed in cosmetics and personal care …show more content…
Many people are unaware of the chemicals they are putting on their bodies through the products they use on a daily basis. “Women use an average of 12 products a day, containing 168 different chemicals. Men use fewer products, but still put 85 chemicals on their bodies” (Lupkin). When people don’t read the labels on their products they are exposing themselves to many chemicals that can have serious effects on their bodies. One chemical that is common in products is phthalates, on labels as it is commonly known as a fragrance. According to Safe Cosmetics “phthalates are found in nail polishes and hair sprays, they can also cause cancer, endocrine disruption and developmental and reproductive toxicity.” If people don’t educate themselves they become vulnerable to many chemicals that can have terrible effects. There are multiple ways for someone to educate themselves on the products they are putting on their bodies. One way is to ask a doctor or physician about the effects of certain products. Also websites such as Skin Deep and Safe Cosmetics offer informative information on both which chemicals are in certain products, what those chemicals actually are, and how those chemicals effect the body. There are also different cosmetic companies such as Beautycounter and Herbivore Botanicals which promote honest and all natural personal care products along

During Ventura’s interview with O’Connor, she discovered that various daily personal hygiene and beauty products ranging from toothpaste and antiperspirant, to shampoo, lotion, and makeup contain ingredients that are linked to everything from acne and rashes, to brain damage, cancer and nervous system damage. Additionally, Ventura further supports her claim with evidence from O’Connor’s book where she states “scientists are finding that women with high levels of certain chemicals in their blood and urine - BPAs and phthalates are the two big ones - are having babies with genital birth defects in baby boys at much higher rates than people who have low levels of those chemicals” (Ventura, 2012). Ventura explains that there are not many laws regulating what substances companies use in their manufacturing processes, therefore giving the government insufficient power to ensure the safety of personal care products stocked on retail shelves. To combat such inadequacies, Ventura never leaves the house without her list of bad chemicals while shopping for…

Any cosmetic or medical companies will tell consumers that their products are the best since it has been tested on animals for safety, but the truth behind animal testing will make buyers think twice about their merchandise. Nowadays, more and more people are teaming up against animal testing. Laboratory testing is done on substances that make up medication and cosmetics, such as perfume, lotion, soap, etc. Animals are used to develop medical treatments, determine the toxicity of medications, and check the safety of products destined for human use. Substances are injected into animal’s bodies to prove that products are harmless to people, and the environment.…

Not only are there no regulations for animal experimentation, but our own government supports it by giving them funds which allow them to conduct experimentation. Our government is the problem. The lack of enforcement of regulations, knowingly that animals are mistreated, having the power to stop it all, and yet they do nothing. The big, beauty brands is the problem.…

According to Troy Seidle a pole concluded that, “88 percent of us believe animal testing causes pain and suffering to animals and that such suffering just for cosmetics isn’t worth it, especially when safe ingredients are already available,”(Seidle). Considering that most people don’t feel the need to buy products with newly tested ingredients, why should companies continue to do that it is not an absolutely necessary practice. There are thousands of chemicals out there that have already gone through the process of being tested so it wouldn’t be like companies couldn’t make new products, they could make many. Yes companies want to make money by selling newly improved products but that is not going to make people want to buy products that aren’t apart of their daily use. Gregory Mone states that animal testing is a long and expensive process and can take several years and use up millions of dollars to carry out, (Mone).…

Millions upon millions of animals are slaughtered every year due to humans testing cosmetics on animals. This number is exceedingly high and needs to be reduced. Mice, rabbits, rats, primates, dogs, and cats are enclosed in cages, in laboratories across the world(Animal Testing 101). Many scientists and universities have shown that animals are not necessary when it comes to testing cosmetics. According to a scientist from NRDC (National Resources Defense Council), there “are non-animal tests that are really valuable, informative, cheaper, and quicker” (Testing Cosmetics).…

These animals are subjected to the very hazardous defects they seek to prevent. With alternative scientific methods already in place, the abolishment of cosmetic animal testing has already been instituted in Europe. The seventh amendment to the European Union Cosmetics Directive prohibited putting animal-tested cosmetics on the market in after 2013 (Fentem, Chamberlain, & Sangster, 2004). Although government inspections are required at some types of animal facilities, the regulatory bodies are closely linked with the industry and may have a shared interest in maintaining the status quo (Frank, 2004). Therefore, the Canadian governments lack of oversight is synonymous with Herbert Spencer’s condemnation for state regulation.…

The Food and Drugs Act defines a cosmetic as “any substance or mixture of substances for use in cleaning, improving or altering the complexion, skin, hair or teeth”, which includes both beauty products and grooming aids, such as soap, shampoo, cream and deodorant (Health Canada, “Cosmetics Legislation”). This means that cosmetics are something that we all use and come in contact with our bodies every single day. For this reason, it is important that we are aware of the ingredients in these cosmetic products and the effects they may have on our bodies. In Canada, there are many steps involved in the regulation of cosmetics and ensuring that these products that we use every day are safe.…
