The Civil War began in April 1861, when the Confederates barraged Union soldiers at in Fort Sumter, South Carolina. This war lasted four years when it ended in May of 1865 during the spring time. The war was very destructive for a new nation that was trying to establish itself and make a future in these lands. It claimed the lives of 600,000-750,000 men from both Confederate soldiers and Union soldiers. They disliked each oth-er’s views out of fear for their beliefs. The southern states wanted more land going west to in-crease the number of slave states and further have more people involved with congress. The same could be said about the northern states. They each wanted to control the majority of congress to protect their views and also their political agenda. Do to this fight over new land and to try and control congress it resulted in continued unrest between both sides for years. The southern states wanted less government control while the northern states wanted a centralized government. When Abraham Lincoln was elected president of the United States the south viewed it as a threat to their way of life but most importantly to the use of slaves.
