Why The Caldecott Illustrations Of Owl Moon

Improved Essays
There are many books that are suggested and given to the committee for the Caldecott award, but only the picture books that bring a story to life with original and provoking illustrations are acknowledged to receive such a distinguished award. The illustrations of books open doors for creativity and imagination while simultaneously exposing the children down new avenues of literacy, vocabulary and language. I believe that illustrator of Owl Moon, John
Schoenherr, has managed to create simple yet beautiful images for this story while simultaneously complimenting the rich literary text, making it very worthy of the coveted
Caldecott award.
The children’s picture book, Owl Moon, portrays many characteristics of a Caldecott deserving picture book.

It’s hard to believe today that Walt Disney was once fired because he “lacked imagination and had no ideas,” or that the Beatles were cut from a record level because the company didn’t think that they had a future in show business. (Weismen) Still harder to believe is that J.K. Books end up on the censored or banned list because are reported to have content that is believed to be harmful to the reader. For children’s books, many complaints are made by parents who think the content of the book could harm their child’s mind or may be an inappropriate topic to learn about. Some of the main complaints are made due to: religion, sexual orientation, political views, violence and “obscene” language. Goosebumps should not be banned because it contains no offensive language and the central character never dies, the protagonists can be both male and female, they can contain good moral lessons for children and promote family values, the books depict protagonists escaping doom with their own wit and ingenuity, and young readers love simple language and easily-followed yet engrossing plots. William Shakespeare’s complex use of imagery and symbolism is what drives his work from being a rudimentary play to an artistic expression of emotions. A typical play from Shakespeare often holds love and romance as a central theme, which applies to A Midsummer Night’s Dream. On the surface, A Midsummer Night’s Dream portrays itself as a romantic comedy combined with mystical works and lover’s desires, all of which is played under the moonlight. However, a deeper exploration into the work reveals an acute symbolism through the Moon that manages to unify the play as a whole.…

Children literature includes books, magazines, stories and poems that children enjoy. It can be traced to stories and songs which were part of the oral tradition that adults shared with their children before the advent of publication. The development of children literature is difficult to trace. However, from the 15th century AD, a large volume of literature, often with a religious or moral message, has been targeted specifically at children. Many of the children books acknowledged today as classics can trace their origins to the late 19th and early 20th centuries which become known as the Golden Age of children literature.…
