In the beginning, told the students what a socratic seminar was, but I think that I could have done a better job if I slowed down and related the book and not just cite the definition. As the other classmates presented they told us what grade level they were teaching, but I forgot to tell them that I was planning to teach fourth grade. I think that I was nervous being the first presenter plus not ever being in the classroom setting before. I choose the book Miss Nelson is Missing, and first read the book to the class. …show more content…
Then I asked the students what were some themes that happened in the story, but as Yessi pointed out sometimes students can forget the term of a theme. So, I should have defined what a theme was that they could understand like, a theme is what the book revolves around. Maybe I could have related it to them in such a way they would understand, for example when you have a themed birthday party what does that mean. After introducing the themes, I asked questions to prepare the discussion. I think that they questions were well put together there were sometimes where it was silent but after a little bit I realized that they were thinking. I should not jump in when I do not see them talking, it just means that they are thinking (unless the silence is longer than a minute or so). After the silence I would as a follow up question to someone making the student assume that the question is only for them, when it is for the whole class. I should have asked the follow up questions to the whole class rather than asking one specific person.
I think that concluding the seminar was the hardest parts because my question did not necessarily sound like it would end the discussion but make the discussion longer. My question was “ What did you learn through this discussion?”. I think that I should have concluded by saying we have learned about respect and values, and how we may not all have the same ideas but can open up to one another.
Overall, I think that the socratic seminar went fairly well, I need to adjust the questions and make the rules clear before having the read
