According to an article found on the NPR website, “Pediatricians Say School Should Start Later for Teens’ Health,” written by Nancy Shute, beginning school too early in the day harms student health and academic capabilities. “...making middle and high schoolers start classes before 8:30 a.m. threatens children's' health, safety and academic performance.” Dr. Cora Breuner, specialist at Seattle Children’s Hospital, stated that children are not getting near the required amount of sleep each night. Due to the early start times, teenagers, on average, are getting somewhere between six to seven hours of sleep per night while they should be getting around eight to ten. This, in turn, leads to many lasting issues. To compensate for the lack of sleep

In the passage "Keep Start Times as They Are," by unknown author, I agree that the times should stay the same because if the times change then the kids will go to sleep later because school will start later. Recent studies show that students who wake up at times different than their “natural sleep clocks” have an easier time adjusting to the times they’ll have to wake up at when they start to work. When students don’t go directly to college they go into the workforce, meaning they will need to be awake and prepared at a different time. Schools should not start or end later to accommodate student’s “natural sleep clocks” due to the fact that before and after school some students need to take care of younger siblings as well as other students who may go to work. Firstly, teenagers often have younger siblings that need to be helped to get ready early in the morning for school and help them after school.…

They have phones witch tend to make them stay up all night. Teenagers chat with their friends or even watch something on their phone. When teens tend not to get eight to ten hours of sleep it could create huge problems.…

It is an ongoing argument on whether high school students should arrive at schools later to help the teens who are sleep deprived, depressed and have serious mood swings. This is inconvenient for a number of reasons. Parents cannot get their children to school on time if the school time is changed, and it interrupts the teens schedules who are already accustomed to the 7:30 time scheduling. In the passage “ High schools starting later to help sleepy teens” by: Michelle Trudeau it states that later school times are helping the teens be more alert in class, they have less depression issues and the parents have less problems than before due to their emotions being more regulated.…

Picture a classroom where students are not paying attention, tuning out the teacher and falling asleep. Not only are these kids losing precious opportunities to learn and expand their knowledge, they are failing to take chances that would help them achieve their future goals. Is this how a flourishing classroom should look like? Unfortunately, this is what happens every day in many schools all around the United States because kids are going to school drowsy and restless. Therefore, I believe schools should start later in the morning.…

Did you know that only one in every five middle and high schools start after 8:30 A.M, yet the American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended that middle and high schools start after 8:30 A.M. Students that don’t get enough sleep are more likely to be overweight, not engage in daily physical activity, suffer from depressive symptoms, engage in unhealthy risk behaviors such as drinking, smoking tobacco, and using illicit drugs, and perform poorly in school. American Academy should start later because students are more likely to have bad things happen to them, and students cannot learn well when their brains are still asleep. Most students that don’t get enough sleep engage in things that are unhealthy. The CDC states that students who don’t get enough sleep are more likely to be overweight, not engage in daily physical activity, suffer from depressive symptoms, engage in unhealthy risk behaviors such as drinking, smoking tobacco, and using illicit drugs, and perform poorly in school. P.O, senators and judge, I stand as Senator Ortega for school start time to be later. Middle and high school times should start no earlier than 8:30 a.m., says the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) in a position statement. Doctors say that starting school earlier in the morning prevents children and teenagers from getting a full night’s sleep, which can affect their health, safety and academic performance. For years, studies have suggested that later school starts can benefit adolescents and teens, who scientists say are wired to stay up late and sleep in. It asserts that if middle- and high-school students are allowed to wake up later in the morning, they will be more focused during the day, more alert behind the wheel and less likely…
