Why Survivors Are Selfish

Imagine someone being in a crumbling building, crushed under ruble and their only hope of survival looks them square in the eye then flees the building even though they wouldn’t be hurt if they helped. Are they selfish? Survivors are often selfish, they only live to tell the tale unscathed because they abandoned people in need of their help. Survivors lack the consideration for others, caring for their wants of comfort more than others needs of survival. People say that self-preservation is human nature, but humans have evolved so that generosity has replaced that trait, so that is no reason to leave fellow men behind. Humanity is based off of cooperation nowadays, too, so leaving someone to die goes against human nature. There are several reasons why survivors are selfish, but those are the predominant three ones. …show more content…
Humans learn selflessness at such a young age, which usually sticks with them through life but when they loose it, they loose consideration for others. Even if they have a “strong consideration for themselves”, human instinct comes into play and tries to get them to help people in need even if their want is to flee, but some people are simply selfish and choose their want over another person’s need. “Even before kids are taught to chip in — perhaps especially before they are told it’s an obligation — children are less selfish than often presumed,” reads Is Human Nature Fundamentally Selfish or Altruistic? by Maia Szalavitz, an author on healthland.time.com, supporting this paragraph by showing that people are naturally selfless.
