The first reason is that white-collar crime is a significant social problem. The Federal Bureau of Investigation routinely suggest that far more is lost to white-collar crimes than to traditional property crimes, such as larceny, robbery, and burglary. White-collar crime is usually committed in businesses according to the FBI’s definition. I feel like the people that commit these crimes don’t understand the detrimental toll it takes on other people. Stealing from a business affects a lot of people because they are combined into that business. By stealing from a business you are taking away money from each individual that is in that business. To elaborate on the third reason you could state that criminologists can gain insight into other types of offenders and offenses. I think this is important because there are a lot of different people that commit white-collar crimes. For example, police officers while on duty have been violating the oath they took as police officers. They’re violating trust within the system by using unnecessary force on African Americans. Recently police officers have been abusing and killing African American males, mostly, all due to an allegation that they broke the law. Criminologist focuses on the consequences of criminal activity on society. The fact that it is our own law enforcement that is committing these white-collar crimes makes it much more vital to try to prevent the ongoing abuses and killings. I think that criminologists and the government are trying to eliminate this problem. I know that police officers today wear body cameras to prevent them from committing illegal activities. Also they’re using media to show positive interactions with police officers and African Americans.
