I have decided to use the story “Good Intentions” to complete this assignment. I believe the teacher was not aware she was actually offending some of her students by using pinto beans to play with. She seemed to be kind hearted and was eager to teach her students by using different kinds of learning tools in her classroom.
Cultural Sensitivity: Cultural sensitivity can be overlooked sometimes when people are not educated on the cultures. I know I am not well educated on every culture I may encounter when I become a teacher. Diversity created by inclusion has come a long way. I am currently in a global/cultural management class. So far, I have learned many things in this class that I will be able to use in the classroom. My observations and interactions with students as an aide have given a better understanding of how students are different. I am learning something new every day. There is not one day that is exactly as the same before.
Strategies for Diversity: There are many strategies that teachers could use to accommodate the needs of diverse students and ensure culturally and emotionally safe classrooms. Here are a couple of ways teachers can accommodate. They can use the sheltered English approach. This is when a students receive instruction in English for most of the school day from the beginning of their schooling. There has been controversy over this method. However, as long as you are consistent, it can work. Another method is called class wide peer tutoring. This strategy requires the students to help out each other. Studies have shown that peer help has improved reading scores. At our campus, our golden rule is, ask three before me. Some students work better in a small group setting than one on one or a big group setting. This gives them a feeling of security and will be able to open up a little to their class mates. These strategies should help a student in the classroom fit in and feel emotionally safe and ensure their culture is not being disrespected. Teachers need to be on their toes and make sure they understand their classroom. The more understanding they have about each individual student, the smoother the school year will be. On our campus, we have to have positive contact with parents/guardian by the third week of school, and every six weeks after that. By doing this, the parents are not getting just negative phone calls when their child is misbehaving or
