With there being many ideas and different styles of leadership, people often use definitions from derivatives of the term that can lead many astray. At first, it does not seem controversial at all, but with student leadership being a foundation of many organizations and groups, it can stir up trouble when falsely interpreted.
When student leadership is interpreted as student leaders, it essentially creates a wall of dictatorship between leaders given a formal title and their peers, without a formal title. This can diminish the effectiveness of the leadership in place. The problem lies where ones given no title, feel they have no right to speak, therefore creating two events. One being the friction between a formal leader and his peer when the peer tries to lead in any form. The other being the leader now having no help and having to tackle a much larger job leading to inefficiency. When student leadership and student leader are interpreted as defined, it will result in there being a multitude of informal leaders.
