Why Student Athletes Should Not Be Paid

Also I believe colleges and universities should not have to pay athletes because they are already providing them athletic scholarships and other benefits. An athlete’s scholarship is a form of salary. According to the NCAA, the average value of a full scholarship at an in-state, public school, is $18,000 a year. For an out-of-state public school the value is $25,000. This money goes towards tuition fees, room and board, required textbooks and much more. These universities are giving student athletes the privilege to not only play sports, but as well as providing a free education. Also, universities treat student athletes like celebrities and offer them many great things that they don’t offer other students. Universities offer personal training programs to some athletes, a personalized meal plan, and free tutors and not to mention all the state of the art facilities they build for these student athletes. With a free marketplace, athletes will be paid based on a supply and demand basis, without government interference. Obviously schools like Texas or USC are going to bring in more money in sports unlike schools in the lesser half of division 1. The top tier schools will be able to pay their athletes more money than, just as deserving athletes, on smaller schools. This will also affect recruiting because more students will want to attend schools that can offer them more money, thus increasing the gap between larger and smaller schools. The competitiveness will also take a hit because some schools will now recruit more talent than other schools, significantly.
