Artificial Intelligence, Friend or Foe?
The age of the A.I is upon us, and we are integrating it into our daily life. We live with it, we work with it and it even does some work for us. We research more and more, to make it smarter, better, stronger, but not thinking of the complication it creates. A.I is becoming more and more unpredictable in parallel to the possibilities and broad uses of it. We think we can handle it, but can we really? We need to think about the dangers they can cause, both lethal and non-lethal. We also need to think of ways to make sure it doesn’t happen.
We think we are safe, but beyond the human limits lies the possibilities of A.I which can lead to eradication of society as we know it! According to James Barrat, Author,

Gary Marcus states that robots and A.I will be able to replace a lot of humans in the workplace in his article Will A Robot Take Your Job(The New Yorker, 2012). Marcus says that “70 percent of today’s occupations will likewise be replaced by automation.” and that is a bit threatening, as it not only means less jobs for us humans, but also less humanity in our workplace. That can have huge complications if the service departments are left to the A.I and robots. Take the movie I, Robot(2004) for example, when a robot prioritized to save a grown man above a little girl because he had a higher chance of surviving. If this were to happen in our society, it would cause an outrage because of such moral difficulties and sensitive actions. Of course A.I and robots would do good to replace the low paying jobs, as well as the dangerous ones such as mining and oil …show more content…
They are a danger, that is not even questionable, but they do make for quite replacement for some jobs since they are better, faster and stronger with their mechanical muscles, yet they do have their fair share of flaws in our society. They are not able to think like humans, and have their orders to follow. That would mean that all the passion in wars would not be left, and it would all be a meaningless slaughter. The usual work would be easily predictable and no breakthrough would be possible, since they are only programmable to do what we know. And since they have no free thinking, science mayhaps stagnate. The can also be a very lethal danger, and might turn on us, if they are free enough. A lot to think about, since this is a very controversial topic, and I think A.I may very well be ‘the next thing’ in our society, but under a very controlled and in a safe

Kevin Kelly’s article starts off by talking about how automation slowly replaced half the work force during the industrial revolution. He mentions that those who during that time period were replaced did not sit idle but found and created new jobs for themselves and others. Mr. Kelly uses this idea of the work force being replaced by steadily improving automation, yet the replaced work force creates new jobs instead of sitting idle, to propel his idea of people being replaced by machines as a positive thing. Mr. Kelly talks about how robots already do the work that humans are incapable of doing, such as working in hazardous locations doing hard labor. Thankfully Mr. Kelly points out that robots will slowly take over white collar jobs, do…

He gives us no answers to the types of jobs that will be available, but instead leaves us questioning ourselves and has dreaming of “What should we do?”(309). The author is completely unclear with this category and didn 't back his claim with enough information showing how jobs will be available to those who have been replaced. There is no response at all as to what happens to the people who have lost their jobs to robots and how they will manage…

Many themes have been present over the course of the book; A Space Odyssey, Some themes show that the progression of humanity comes with a great cost, though the theme that stuck out both to me and the other readers was that dependency and the trusting of technology can be very perilous. This theme sticks out the most due to the fact that it is very relatable to the real world as new, more advanced technologies emerge and the other reason being how technology affects the characters in the novel. I personally believe that we are commencing to get too affixed to technology, the average teen says that they can’t live without their phone, or television and with new technology being revealed every day such as the Hoverboard, IO Hawk and much more,…

Today, in society humans pretend to believe that automation does not have an impact on humanity and humanities success route. They believe that it will somehow destroy all economic jobs. “By 2018, automation is going to be in a full swing in the United States and around the world. There are estimates that it could replace fifty percent of our jobs,” stated by Gray Scott. Scott indicates that, there is a chance that automation could replace fifty percent of our jobs but however, fifty percent of jobs will be created as well.…

In “Better Than Human,” Kevin Kelly discusses that we live in an economy where the revolution of technology is becoming more common. He states that “automation has eliminated all but 1 percent of their jobs, replacing them (and their work animals) with machines” (299). Soon jobs that are paperwork related will also be replaced with bots and so on. Automation will be so epic that it will soon do jobs as a lawyer, doctor, or an even a surgeon. Kelly states that creating robots will allow us to “see how far artificial intelligence has penetrated our lives” (301).…

If people instead use technology to gain a “much deeper understanding” (par 6), companies can improve human productivity instead of replacing humans altogether. As a solution, use AI to replace deadly jobs and only assist jobs in demand to enhance work production. Human mistakes can lead to injuries and death because humans are very fragile. Machinery can last a much longer time and no one would freak out to the destruction of an A.I. if it doesn’t affect the human body directly. Companies shouldn’t use robots to take over work that is tedious but to cover humans on work too dangerous for the human body.…

My cultural artifact, self-driving Ubers, is mentioned in the article as one of the more disruptive innovations to the job market. It is becoming increasingly common for “unskilled “ jobs to be automated. In the author’s example about her father, she admits that she is glad that automation replaced her father’s job because she felt like it was a waste of his talents. So the question arises: is it worth it to replace human jobs with bots?…

These robots will be and are taking away jobs to willing people. Now without a job these people may not have enough money to even provide for their families and without money they will become homeless. If we do not at least try and limit the population then we will have too many people in America and not enough space. Then everything will be too expensive due to the fact that if we have more people, than the demand for goods and services will be greater causing prices to go up and most things may become unaffordable to…

However, some of the tweets I’ve made mentioned how they have started to introduce robots into restaurants as waiters and other jobs that are typically done by humans. I think the introduction of robots replacing humans in the work place could affect our society and cultural environment based on current norms and values that we have. Robots may have a hard time being accepted in some countries that have strong religious and cultural beliefs. I also think people may be a little resistant to accept robots in fields that humans would normally do such as doctor, pilot and police…

As people continue to upgrade and advance computer technology, focusing on mimicking human traits and patterns, it won’t be long until robots begin to replace us. Many people can say without hesitation that mass unemployment will erupt as companies resort to cheaper and more efficient artificial workers. This second part doesn’t seem too bad, in fact its a sci-fi lovers dream (my dream) of slowly becoming one with robots.…
