Why Stand Your Ground Law Exist

Decent Essays
a. I can see why Stand Your Ground Law exist in some states, because citizen should have the right to protect themselves in life or death situations. Let me explain, if I were to go out anywhere outside of my home, and someone were to approach me with the intention to hurt me or possibly worst. I should have the right to protect myself with deadly forces if it is ever comes to it. I think this is why Stand Your Ground Law exist, and Martin v.s Zimmerman case just help the law put in place is some states. But I also thinks it is ridiculous to shoot someone on the street. If you saw something bad, call the police.

As the nation has evolved, the interpretation of the Constitution has varied. While the Sixth Amendment has been largely upheld in most domestic cases, in fact it has routinely been denied to those who are entitled to its protection when the government deems the situation as a threat to national security. Similarly, the understanding of the Eighth Amendment has been strictly interpreted in matters of domestic law, but the meaning is deviated from in cases where national security has taken the…

Police should be allowed to stop and frisk subjects who seem suspect. In the case Terry v. Ohio (1968) the Supreme Court’s ruling allowed the procedures of “Stop and Frisk” to be acceptable. For a stop and first to be considered legal, the police officer must have reasonable suspicion that a crime has already occurred or is about to take place. Only then can a police officer start a line of questioning toward the suspect. However, the “frisk” portion of stop and frisk must only be done if the police officer suspects the individual is carrying any dangerous weapon.…

Thousands of americans every year are brutally beaten, tazed, and in some cases even shot for little or no reason at all other than the cop is trying to prove something. It's saddening when the “honest cops” who are supposed to be protecting us decide that they have something to prove and they need to harm others in order to get the respect they want. Now days if a man has a hostage with a knife the only way to get the hostage back is to pump the man full of bullets. In this video the police from the U.K are able to subdue a mentally damaged man wielding a machete without firing a single shot. It's amazing right?…

Prior to the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald in October of 2014, one officer requested a Taser to better diffuse the conditions. No officer near the scene had another non-lethal way to deal with the situation at hand (Give Cops). This is exact testament contributes greatly to the need for gun control laws–even in law enforcement. There are those who support gun control laws in the United States and there are those who oppose gun control laws. Gun control laws should not violate a citizen’s right to bear arms, however, these laws should exist in order to assure security for the country as a whole.…

While police brutality, abuse of power, racial profiling and targeting the poor are arguments against the Broken Window Theory, they are not necessarily caused by it. The police have certain rules of engagement when dealing with suspects that they must follow, however, this is often mistaken for police brutality and abuse of power. The media hype over stories of people like Eric Garner, Freddie Gray and Michael Brown cause stories to be told from a biased and largely anti-police point of view (Gainor). There’s proof that using Broken Windows policing keeps communities safer by getting dangerous criminals off the streets by arresting them for small crimes when the police do not yet have enough evidence to arrest them for more major crimes.…

Imagine being a witness of an attack between a criminal and an elderly lady, wanting to help but it is not that easy to approach the attacker without any protection. Will carrying a gun make anyone feel safe? For many, carrying a handgun is by far the safest protection. One of the ways I would try and reduce or prevent as much crime as in today’s world would be to re-structure the police practices from using aggressive force during un-necessary traffic stops, which I consider labeling. After all the killings of black men, we have a lot of problems surrounding our justice system, including the courts. It is up to us to make sure that our children and grandchildren are safe, especially if you are a person of color. There is a big difference between black and white views on law enforcement and the way people of color are treated. We need to form a task force to be able to figure out a way to make a positive impact on lower income communities and for a trusting relationship between the police enforcement and the communities with the largest crime rate.…

As Kelly Brown Douglas notes in her book Stand Your Ground, one of reasons for perpetuating slavery after the other Western European countries abolished it was due to America’s belief in Manifest Destiny. White Anglo-Saxons assumed they were called by God to rule the “New World”, but also to rule the Africans they had enslaved. In essence, God chose white people over all other races to be the ruling elites who dominate the world. They are the chosen people, in similar ways to Israel, who were God’s chosen people, determined to rule and colonize the “Promised Land”. Not only would Americans colonize, they would also proselytize and set an example of what pious morality ought to look like.…
