Why Spiders Just Want To Paint

Spiders Just Want to Paint During the past summer I helped paint a few murals on the old wooden green doors down at the Freight House Farmers’ Market. Along with fifteen other apprentices, I painted for four hours a day, four days a week. It was an easy schedule, nothing too taxing. The sixteen of us all found a few small problems every now and then during the painting process. After holding a palette in one hand for an hour or two in the chilly morning air, my hand became frozen and rigid. Several minutes would have to pass before my hand could even move in the slightest. Since I didn’t really talk to Parker, I didn’t stop to ask him what he was doing. I just walked past him, thinking he was trying to do some sort of artsy hipster thing. The arachnid was alive, and it had somehow managed to stay lodged in Parker’s shoe the entire time it took him to drive down to the Freight House. Thankfully, it stayed put where Parker had deposited it, so we all got to gape at it from a safe

The Use of Symbolism Within “The Order of Charlotte’s Going” Throughout many of Shirley Jackson’s stories, symbols are used to portray a deeper meaning. This can be seen in her short story “The Order of Charlotte’s Going,” where the main idea is that jealousy, and the love of possessions, can make people do terrible things to anybody, even the people who are seemingly closest to them. The symbols used within the story are spiders, which portray Charlotte’s fears and Anne’s plot to kill her; candy, which demonstrates seemingly nice items having the possibility to cause harm, and Anne’s use of Charlotte’s weaknesses against her; and illness, which symbolizes Anne’s jealousy of Charlotte, and Charlotte’s dependency on Anne. These symbols help the story to progress, and create double-meanings that you may not catch during your first read-through.…

Since childhood, spiders to me have remained the blood curdling, bone-chilling creature, with the ability to paralyze almost everyone – from adult men to teenage girls – with fear. As a teenage girl, I seem to be the stereotypical, terrified victim of the spider. Flashback to my earlier teenage years, and I was not moving that spider. There was no way – it was not a job for me. I was determined to avoid contact and proximity at all costs, even if this meant evacuating the room.…
