Why Softball Is Important To Me

“Either you run the day, or the day runs you.” Jim Rohn said this and it powerfully connects to me. The quote means, are you killing time aimlessly or exploiting it purposefully. I try to live everyday with at least one goal, a purpose, an objective. My life can best be described by a softball stolen from a field, memories of my family, and my future career.

A softball is a symbol of my life. My life would be completely different if I didn’t play softball. I wouldn’t rush to practice every day after school, drive six hours every Friday night, to wake up early Saturday morning just to play three games in 90-degree weather, or make long lasting memories with my teammates. I will never forget the intensity of the 6th inning, championship game, for the South Dakota High School State Softball Tournament. Standing on the mound while trying to stay focused is

Like it or not, family is a part of what makes you into the person you are today. The memories with my family are unforgettable. Kayaking with my dad, learning to shoot a gun, and picking apples in an orchard. A family photo is a symbol of my life. I love family drives in the Black Hills. Listening to music, driving through mud, and picking chokecherries.

A majority of people don’t know what they want to be when they’re older. I have put a lot of thought into it, but I have narrowed it down to a few ideas. One idea is to be a college softball coach. I’ve always known, I don’t want an office job. Being a coach takes dedication, hard work, and patience. I love the feeling of knowing you have made a difference in somebody’s life. It may not be changing their athletic ability, but as little as altering their personality.

The family memories are the past, the softball is the present, and my career is the future. I have the ability to run the day, make my goals, and make every moment the best it can. I have goals, I may not always succeed; but I will always use my best

Like all little kids, I just wanted to get to feel the thrill of getting a hit and running around all of the bases to make it home. At six years old not only was I new to the sport of softball, but also to the girls that were signed up for the team. Prior to living in Brasher Falls and playing softball in North Lawrence, my family lived in Bombay. I have always been very talkative, sociable, and bold, so making friends with the other girls was not an issue for me. Some of the girls that I became friends with through coach pitch and first-sixth grade softball ended up being my teammates while playing basketball and softball all throughout high school.…

The game was tied at 7-7 in the last inning with two outs, not an optimum situation for any hitter out on the softball field of a championship game. There were two girls on base, one on second, the other on third. The sound of my metal cleats crushing the dirt filled my ears as I walked up to home plate. I knew I had to be resilient after striking out the time before. The intensity was ubiquitous and I could feel it from everyone around me.…

I’ve been playing baseball ever since I could pick up a bat. Since then, I’ve been to countless practices and played in hundreds of games. Baseball is essentially a second life, and if you were to step into my room, for example, you’d see a childhood baseball bat leaning against my nightstand, several baseballs on my dresser and scattered on the floor, and a picture of Wrigley Field displayed on my wall. I spent most of my summer travelling across the Southeast playing in tournaments in Atlanta, Charleston, and Raleigh, where I was able to experience playing against very talented players in front of several college coaches. These tournaments have given me some of the greatest experiences of my life, and really reflect just why and how much I love baseball.…
