Why So Many People Died In Early Jamestown

One major reason why people died in early jamestown is because of war with the Powhatan tribe of native americans. In 1607 the first settlers of Jamestown arrived and they were greatly underprepared.More reasons why the colonists of early Jamestown died is because they did not know a lot about their surroundings, they were at war with the powhatan indians frequently , and they did not have enough food to survive the first year. The people of Jamestown did not know anything about the land because no one has ever been there to map the area out and see which region is the most fitted for the most successful and comfortable starting of a new world. What they tried to do was to plant their own crops but the soil was too sandy and did not have enough nutrients to sustain life with their crops.What the colonists then tried to do what hunt and fish for food but they did not know where to hunt and the water frequently became brackish (when water is too salty or polluted with other materials to drink or use.So they eventually got desperate and went to the native american indian tribe named the Powhatans. …show more content…
Then there was a drought that lasted from 1605 to 1615.The Powhatan and English trade started to diminish because they had less resources to trade.Eventually it the tribes stopped trading completely and they were stealing from each other
