Slaves were used in the past to work on plantations to make cotton and other goods. People had previously seen it as the right thing to do as they were saving the Africans from their backward lifestyles. Whereas today it is illegal and seen as a sort of underground black-market trade, where women are especially exploited and traded for sex. Another way in which slavery occurs today is

Previously, people believed that slavery was a blessing to the African people, as traders were saving them from cannibalism and religion. After many years of hard work by abolitionists and attitudes eventually changing, people seen it as no longer right to treat other human beings this way and eventually it was abolished and made illegal. In 1789 when the U.S Constitution went into effect, it guaranteed the practice of slavery in America. By the mid-1800’s the topic of slavery became a divisive force in the country, with much of the north, especially the Republican Party opposing it and almost the entire south and many northern democrats supporting it. The senate passed the 13th Amendment to the Constitution of United States on 8th April 1864 and the House on 31st January 1865 and it was ratified on the 6th December 1865. It abolished servitude and slavery as a legal institution. Though the Constitution does not explicitly use the word “slaves”, it does refer to it by using words such as “such persons” in Article 1, Section 9 and “a person held to service or labor” in Article…

Before entering this class, I thought that the views and preconceived ideas that I had about slavery were accurate. I thought that the education I had received on slavery when I was in middle and high school was enough for me to say that I understood the effect that slavery had. However, my apathetic nature towards this subject had caused me to remain complacent in all of the issues that have stemmed from chattel slavery and are still ever present in today’s society. A common misconception that I particularly have had is that while slavery was horrible, it was a long time ago and does not affect our society today. Through this class I have discovered that slavery extends so much further than just after the ending of the civil war.…
