First, Columbus Day shouldn’t be celebrated because Columbus thought he landed in India and didn’t think he discovered new territory. This is proven in Columbus’s journal on November 1st, 1492 when the Admiral, a man on Columbus’s first crew, says, “These people are of the same appearance and have the same customs as those of the other islands without any religion so far as I know, for this day I have never seen Indians on board.” This suggests that Columbus and his crew all thought they had landed in Asia when the Admiral said, “Indian, which implies that they are people of India. This statement is proven on the map in New World Encyclopedia: Vikings-Voyages where it shows all of the Viking’s voyages and territories they took. On the map it shows the Viking landing in Greenland in 982 and then in Vinland (meaning Wine Land in Latin) in 1000, which is now located in Canada. This suggests that Vikings actually landed in America 500 year before Columbus ever did. We also know that Columbus wasn’t the first to discover America because in Columbus’s journal he talks about “Indians” already settled there before his arrival. For that reason Columbus Day shouldn’t be a day off because he wasn’t the real person to find
