Why Shoulders Should Be Covered At All Time

Improved Essays
The rule “Shoulders must be covered at all times.” Should be removed, why it should be changed is because it is kind of sexist.

The existing rule is that no shoulders can be shown on school grounds. Yet some people are getting away with the rule, but only really the males. So why can boys get away with showing shoulders yet girls can not. Many things in a female’s wardrobe shows shoulders. Expectically in the summer with the heat they would not like to have many layers on. From name brands to things at the thrift store there's always things in a female clothing that would show some type of shoulder or their body in this time of their life as a teenager. Another problem with the rule is it is very sexist! Showing that boys can do things that girls can not. The last problem I see with this is that it shows that boys just

Some people might say that it will encourage harassment or even rape. Yet how they are wrong about this is even women who don’t dress provocatively still get harassed and even raped and they can’t be blamed it was ‘their fault’ since they dressed very provocative. Yet they were fully dressed and maybe even well covered, yet it still happened. Another reason is that they might start to be seen as just a sexual object to the men. Yet to counter that, that is not their purpose for the attire. They just want to express their bodies. If they are comfortable and want to show off their body no matter size, shape, color or style. They should be able to feel confident about their bodies. My last reason is for body shaming. With this rule girls might get shamed for their bodies and the way they look. Yet why should she be shamed for being confident? Some girls are so ashamed of their bodies, and they are showing absolutely no skin! So why should you shame the one that have that confidence. Of give the non confident ones gave a chance to build that self

Deborah L. Rhode author of “Why Looks Are the Last Bastion of Discrimination” discusses the idea of how looks have been a large contributor to society since the beginning of human kind. In her article, Rhode states, “Although the government is no longer in the business of enforcing such discrimination, it still allows businesses, schools, and other organizations to indulge their own prejudices.” (Rhode 244) With her saying this it could not be any truer because it still applies to Cedartown High School. At Cedartown High School, some subjects cover the idea of discrimination that Rhodes describes.…

I have decided to write this journal article on an article that I found online that speaks directly to experiences that I had throughout middle school and high school. The article is titled, “The Sexism of School Dress Codes”. A young girl named Maggie Sunseri noticed that the dress codes in her school were geared more directly to girls than it was to boys. At first, Maggie rightfully saw this concept to be unfair. The rationale that the administrators gave behind this idea, however, was even more upsetting to Maggie.…

In fact, women’s soccer has the 4th highest concussion rate of any sport, following closely behind football. In conclusion, I believe that the shoulder and bra strap dress code rule should be ameliorated or changed. It makes girls feel uncomfortable and insecure in their own skin. It teaches them to be ashamed of their perfectly-normal body parts, and most of the time they already feel bad enough. Lastly, females shouldn’t be concerned about wearing a shirt that reveals their shoulders so that male students can have better focus. A shoulder is a shoulder, and a bra strap is a bra strap, they will not debauch male students.…

Dress codes standards send home students every day, all over the country, for being too revealing. Most are girls, and on occasions, boys that struggle with the standards, therefore they should be lowered. It’s taking away from your class time, limits self-expression, and the rules can sometimes not be correctly administered are all problems caused by dress codes standards. The dress code can take away from class time because everyone is more concerned with how we are dressed, rather than worrying about if we’ll do good on our next math test, or studying for the history final. During class, teachers can stop their lesson to tell one of their students that they are violating dress codes, therefore taking time away from class and from other students learning for something that is not relevant outside of school.…

Hey Everybody, As a teenager, I always got told to dress modestly by adults, I have been in the church ever since I was born, so I have seen a wide variety of interpretations on what people think modesty is. Today we live in a culture were dressing modestly is taught as something that we should do, but its also looked down upon a the same time. So I decided to take it into my own hands to do some research and see what some people's idea of modesty is. To start off, I went to the always trusty google and looked up the definition of modest and I got this "unassuming or moderate in the estimation of one's abilities or achievements.…

Everyone has their own opinion on what attire is appropriate for school; some people may feel that some of the clothes that the girls wear is “too much”, but what exactly is too much? A majority would say that revealing shoulders and bra straps are inappropriate, but others would think differently. While some of the clothes people wear shouldn’t be worn in a learning environment, society shouldn’t be biased and make a fair dress code for both male and female students because it can make female women students ashamed of their bodies, which is degrading and makes them out to be sexual objects. With male students having the privilege to wear almost whatever they want, it makes females feel like they should cover up their bodies due to the fact that their bodies can distract boys from getting an education.(Since a females education isn’t as important). There has been many incidents where a female student would be taken out of class or sent home because her shoulders were showing or was wearing shorts on a hot day.…

The dress code should be less strict in that we dress to show our personalities and express ourselves. It should also be less derogatory towards female students, because “their bodies will distract the boys,” is a sexist statement claiming that boys will be boys and that girls just need to deal and accept it. Most girls breaking the dress code do not do it for attention, but when they spend money on clothes that have nothing wrong with them they want to wear them. In fact, it is hard to find clothes manufactured to actually fit the “dress code” due to designers conforming to society's new…

It is actually the exact opposite. Our society has gotten so caught up in the idea that the more skin we show, the less deserving of respect we are; that self-respect is to cover up and to hide our bodies, even if we are more comfortable flaunting the skin we’re in. There is one thing that we all have in common, and that is a body. It is not taboo or improper to wear a short skirt or tight top if it promotes your self-esteem because your body is not taboo or…
