Smoking Should Be Banned In Public Places

You walk into a restaurant, and immediately smell it; smoke. It is as off-putting as can be, but you decide to sit down and eat anyways. Do you know what you’re exposing yourself to? The chemicals you are ingesting as you breath in the smoke? You’re being exposed to carcinogens, or cancer causing substances, against your will. Smoking should be banned in public places for the health problems it can cause, the damages it can cause business owners ,and the inconvenience it puts on customers. First, smoking causes numerous health problems to the smoker. Graham Jackson states, “...there is no such thing as safe smoking. Smoking five cigarettes a day doubles your risk of heart disease and smoking 20 a day increases your risk by at least 10 times. Reducing the number of cigarettes smoked helps, but quitting is better”(19). Smoking raises your blood pressure and increases the tendency of blood clotting. Cigarettes contain numerous types of harmful substances in them. Substances like: nicotine, tar, arsenic, carbon monoxide, and even more dangerous chemicals. Nicotine is an extremely addictive drug. The risk of cancer alone should be enough for people to rethink smoking, but unfortunately many people are addicted because of the drug nicotine. There are around seven thousand chemicals in cigarettes and almost all of them are passed through the air in the form of secondhand smoke. Smoking in public is a selfish act, and it is one that imposes on other people’s right. Smoking should be banned in public places because of the clear and overwhelming health risks is possesses, the damages it can cause the business owner, and the inconvenience it places on the people that visit those establishments.
