Campus Pride, an organization lead by Christian Wiggins, studies the positive effects a safe zone has on the individuals who need them. “The Importance of Safe Zone” fully supports the need for specific areas that are considered safe at universities. What can be gathered from the information is that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students are different when it comes to sexual orientation or gender identity. According to the directors, college can be very isolating place for people such as LGBT students, so they need a place to feel welcomed and safe from the negativity that may surround them. For reasons such as this, many colleges have started a safe zone project training for teachers, and students. The importance of the training is to be able to communicate and understand what the LGBT students are going through. The safe zone trainers are called “allies” because they are supportive no matter what. Evidence was gained by the directors that safe zone projects do make a difference in the lives of LGBT students because their comfort levels will rise and the trainers will give the students friends to have a conversation with.
