Punishment interferes with the bond between parent and child as it is not a human nature to feel love towards someone who hurts us deeply. Beating a child does not get them to respect you but fear you. The children being smacked only listen because they are afraid to get hit again. This can result in deeply hurting your child because if he has a problem at school, he will be afraid to tell you.
