A highly discussed topic in today’s society is the current state of minimum wage; should it be raised lowered, or eliminated altogether? Minimum wage is currently at $7.25, although some states and cities have raised their minimum wage even higher. A higher minimum wage helps working class families, strengthens the economy, and it has not adjusted for inflation. To begin, minimum wage helps working class families and by raising the minimum wage, it will have an immense impact on their family income as a whole (Hall, par. 7). More families will have the chance to make more money and support themselves. Families will be able to buy more consumer goods to maintain their family resources. Raising the wage while the economy is weak helps families in need by generating economic activity that benefits the entire population. If the minimum wage is raised, even by a little bit, consumer good prices will lower and the middle class will be able have more purchasing power (Barnett, par. 11). It increases earnings and improves the lives of hundreds of thousands of people (Biegler, par. 19). Raising minimum wage reduces poverty without jeopardizing employment. A range of economic studies show that raising the minimum wage increases earnings and employers see a far more stable workforce due to increased poverty (presidents plan). The economy will have more money progressing throughout as workers are able to spend more. It would be more logical to help lift people out of poverty than rely on minimum wage. “The businesses best suited to the higher-wage world often lean more heavily on machines than their competitors or derive greater economic benefits from paying their workers a higher wage” (Scheiber, par. 22).     Increasing the minimum wage will raise the level of students that will have a higher level of education. As the number of education students increases so does the workforce, there are more people that are eligible for jobs, therefore less students that are unemployed and unqualified for the work force.
