Why Should Marijuana Be Legalized

Marijuana In today’s world one of the biggest talked about topics is the legalization of marijuana. “Marijuana, also know as cannabis, is the most widely used illicit drug in the world” (brucealanblock.com). “Each year, billions of dollars are spent by governments around the world in the “war on drugs” to combat this so called scourge” (brucealanblock.com). “Marijuana become illegal in 1937 because of racism, fear, protection of corporate profits, yellow journalism, ignorant, incompetent, corrupt legislators, personal career advancement, and greed (drugwarrant.com). They are the ones that are against legalization. Why? If marijuana were to be legalized, they would be out of a job in a matter of minutes. “They make their enormous sums of money because of the absence of competition and the monstrous street prices that come from the increased risk (Messel). “Decriminalization of the plant would put big name cartels out of business. The competition would boom, forcing the prices to lower which then leads to loss of profit. The underground economy is a billion dollar industry. Money circulating in the United States makes its way outside to international gangs to help them keep their drug business alive. Marijuana being illegal makes the American money that much more profitable outside of the U.S.. The war on drugs has done nothing but put the United States farther in debt. Users of this plant will stand up for their rights and freedom until the war is over. Like the failure of alcohol prohibition, marijuana will always find its way into our country, cities, and our people. Marijuana is not always supported by the typical teenage stoner who just wants to smoke pot all the time. The plant itself has many medicinal uses that most people are not aware of. It is the only drug that has the most medicinal uses according to a list by medicalmarijuana.com, which lists more than once hundred possible conditions that can be treated with marijuana. One may argue that prescription drugs must be safer because they’re legal, right? Wrong, it is a fact that “marijuana is patently safer than many commonly prescribed drugs (Yarrusso).” If this is the case, how can someone be so comfortable using prescription drugs who are given to them by a doctor, but another drug that is illegal is in fact much safer than most prescribed drugs. Marijuana is a plant that is in no way more harmful than tobacco or alcohol. Most doctors also believe that it is no more addictive than alcohol or tobacco either (Messeli). Marijuana can pose a problem if the drug is abused, but so can anything else. Drinking too much whatever can have some severe effects on the body that can lead to death, does that mean we should outlaw water? Big Macs are abused daily by the obese, yet nothing has been done about this. High Times clearly stated that overdoses from marijuana use are nearly impossible, announcing that it is a scientific fact that marijuana is not toxic to
