Career Goal

For as long as I could remember, I have wanted a career in the healthcare field. I enjoy taking care of people around me and it became my life goal to work towards making people feel better. My educational goals consist of acquiring a Master’s in Public Health (MPH) with a concentration in Health Promotion and Policy (HPP). On the other hand, my career goal is to one day be able to open a wellness clinic where I will be able to educate people around me on the importance of taking their health seriously and how to go about doing so. However, I will not be able to achieve both my educational and career goals if I do not have the opportunity to start and complete my Master’s degree program.

As a patient at various times in the healthcare center in Nigeria, I am of the opinion that healthcare was not accorded the premium service that should be expected from citizens compared to the high expectation many in the developed world demand from their health professionals and the larger healthcare sector. My preliminary assumption for the wide gap in delivery outcomes in both countries is that both countries’ healthcare systems have a different approach to patient education. This assumption raises certain questions: how do Nigerians view their healthcare; what prevents citizens from seeking healthcare; and why are citizens not accustomed to following up on their health through periodic medical check-ups?
