Why Should George Have Killed Lennie

Decent Essays
In Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck George should've killed Lennie, because George was just babysitting Lennie, Lennie could of hurt more people, and Lennie would always cause trouble when the two went to different places. A reason why George should’ve is that George then wouldn't have to take care of anyone.“George held out his hand. Come on. Give it to me”(Steinbeck pg.8). This is one of the reasons why George should have killed Lennie is because George wouldn’t have anyone holding him back. Also, George could always say that he was trying to protect everyone else. George should've killed Lennie because if George would of left Lennie alive then he could have hurt/killed more people. “She struggled violently under his hand”(Steinbeck pg.91).

I, personally, don’t think George was justified in killing Lennie, but some of the evidence from the text proves otherwise. Most people saw Lennie as a child and not a grown man, which is understandable, and that may be one reason why George wanted to get rid of him. Many times he was called a child or people would say he acted like one. For example, when Lennie brought the puppy in the bunkhouse and George made him take it back, Slim said, “He’s jes’ like a kid, ain’t he.” Lennie was constantly in trouble which made it hard for George to keep a job for long.…

If George would not have shot Lennie he wouldn’t be a good friend, George put Lennie out of his misery from suffering.
