The second amendment states "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." (Erler) Thus saying that the people in the United States have the right to own and keep weapons. However, it does not say what specific weapons individuals can and cannot own. The second amendment leading to the next issue whether the right to bear arms is an individual right or a collective right, which is a nation 's right. Yes, there is nothing in the constitution saying what kind of right it is. However, it does say militia, which isn 't the government, it is a group of volunteers fighting or their country. When the founding fathers wrote the constitution, it was in times of war and the 2nd amendment today is being exaggerated today, but it states that the militias can protect themselves in times when the government is trying to take over. (Erler) Yes, it was meant for the militias to protect themselves. However, when it was written, it was in times of war and we are not in war, plus now we are in a democracy, controlled by the people, so we don 't have to worry about the government taking overthrow us. However, all of the weapons and magazines that produced before could be resold and reused, so the ban wasn 't as efficient as they thought it was going to be. (Beckett) Yes, the ban helped reduce crime and shootings. However, there was no clear evidence to support this. Some people oppose gun control, but supports the ban and thinks we should have a longer waiting period to purchase guns and should have stronger background checks.(Diamond) Yes, waiting longer and having stronger background checks does help stop criminals from buying guns. However, your criminal record is deleted after three to five years of no criminal activity, depending on what you did. Why do people think it will work today if it didn 't work 20 years
