A proportion of abortions occur because the parents decide that it would be better for themselves and their unborn child if the pregnancy were terminated. This normally is a result of the baby having a genetic defect. In modern times with advanced technology, doctors can determine whether the child will be born with a genetic defect or not. Some genetic defects include down syndrome, cystic fibrosis, sickle cell disease, and Tay-Sachs. Many of these defects greatly decrease the child’s life expectancy and quality of life. For example, a child with Tay-Sachs is only expected to live for four to five years. Also, those with cystic fibrosis can suffer from painful and unpleasant symptoms as they slowly lose the ability to breathe. (mayoclinic.com) Another way that the pregnancy could be harmful is if the mother has a condition that makes her incapable of carrying the child. For example, if the mother has cancer or heart disease, the pregnancy could be life threatening. In a newspaper article, the author accurately sums up the argument over the reasons, including a life threatening pregnancy, why the mother should have the right to an abortion. “Abortion opponents say women seek abortions in haste and confusion.
