Why Sex Education Should Be Taught In School

The classroom grows silent as the teacher approaches. All faces turn red as a switch flips, turning on a projector, revealing the human anatomy. All across America, schools teach kids about sex differently. Most teaching methods, like ours, stress abstinence. The problem with this is teens haven't been educated on the proper method to safe sex. From getting pregnant, to transferring disease, to the loss of a young child's innocence here's why sex education needs to be taught in 6th grade. Getting pregnant young is very easy to do especially before the first menstrual cycle. Once they get pregnant they have little options, abortion or no future, and that's how teens see it. "The overwhelming focus was on how to make sure you didn't go and get yourself knocked up, which as far as we were taught meant remembering that you were not to substitute K-Y Jelly for other liquids" (Cosslett). "Between the years 2006 to 2008, 46 percent of males and 33 percent of females did not receive formal instruction about contraceptives before they had sex, according to Guttmacher Institute" (Clarke). However parents nowadays try their best to educate their kids. "According to a data brief by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in 2010, two out of three male teenagers and four out of five female teenagers reported having talked about sex education topics with a parent." (Clarke). Most states see abstinence as an easy way to get their points across, but if there's a will there is a way. "The era of abstinence-only education in the US is mostly over. But abstinence is, of course, the most effective way to not get pregnant or get an STD — and it's one that nearly all states feel comfortable emphasizing" (Nelson). Let's stop using the easy way of teaching and get the point
