Driving down the highway. CRASH, a body flies across the center line. A scene that happens more than people may think. The first automobile was made in 1886, many say that Karl Benz was the first person to produce the first car. In the United States, the Ford motor company first started mass production of cars for the people in 1908. The first law about seatbelts was signed in 1958 by Congress that every car had to have a seat belt manufactured in them. Seat belts should be worn while in a vehicle, because it is the law, people die, it minimizes injuries. There are two laws on seat belts that have been passed by the state of Oklahoma. In the United States the average ticket for not buckling up is 250 dollars. Then in 2003 Illinois passed a law that allowed police officers to pull a driver for not buckling up, they handed out 43,000 more tickets and the use of seatbelts went up nine percent. In 1974 they changed from a lap belt to a chest and lap belt that we have today. The Safety Belt Performance grant has given states up to 100 million dollars each year to reward states for keeping their seat belt usage above ninety percent …show more content…
On average there is 2.35 million people that are injured yearly because of car accidents. People sixteen to twenty have the most deaths in car accidents at 8,000 people per year. The number of people that have been killed in car accidents or hospitalized has been reduced due to seat belt laws. States that have changed their seat belt laws to primary laws saw a bigger increase on seat belt use in every person in the vehicle. In 2009 a survey was conducted it showed that the per-mile fatality rate decreased when heavier laws were passed for seatbelts.
