Why School Should Start Later

Even though a lot of studies show that schools starting at a later time would majorly benefit students, some people still believe that schools should not start later because it may counteract with students who participate in afterschool activities, such as sports or clubs. However, schools should start later because teens need to be getting the proper amount of sleep. When teens don’t get enough sleep, it impacts them in many ways, and if school started earlier, there would be many benefits. For example, adolescents experience “phase delay”, which can make it hard to fall asleep at a normal time. Another advantage of schools starting later is that there will be better student grades. This quote shows that since numerous studies have shown that early school start times result in students getting less sleep, if students are able to get more sleep, they’re less likely to get poor grades. Additionally, the article says, “Poor quantity and quality of sleep can lead to health concerns such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and obesity” (Suni and Vyas 2023). This quote proves that when students don’t get enough or good enough sleep, it can increase their chances of suffering from one of the life-changing diseases previously listed. But, if schools were able to start later, it would result in students getting more sleep and being less likely to get one of those diseases. In contrast, although it might be true that a later start time for schools would be beneficial for students in many ways, some individuals believe that schools starting at a later time would have numerous conflicts and consequences.
