Why School Should Start Later

A problem the many students have with school is that it starts too early. So why have to get up so early to work if you are still tired and sleepy. This is the main cause of poor academic performance. The school day should start later because the students will be less tired, their teachers will see academic improvement and they will meet their sleeping needs. Students will be less tired if they get enough sleep. “If school starts later a chemical called melatonin produced while you sleep will wear off around 8 am” (Should the School Day Start Later?). Once this chemical wears off the students will feel good. “The CDC reports that during the 2011-12 school year, fewer than 1 out of 5 middle/high schools across the US began their school day at 8:30 am or later, the start time recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics” (Viadero 5). The sleeping time needed by teens and younger children differs. For example, teens need to get at least 8 hours of sleep. While on the other hand younger kids need to get at least 9 hours of sleep. Many studies show that is a school day starts half an hour later it can have major health and academic benefits ( Should the School Day Start Later?). But of course the is not possible if school is starting at 7:45 am or earlier. For example, “ Most kids are playing sports until 8 or 9 pm, and they have to do all their schoolwork when they get home” “(Should the School Day Start Later?). This i sthe main cause of poor academic performance and if this keeps up teachers will never see academic improvement. In 2000, high schools in Minneapolis changed their starting time from 7:25 am to 8:30 am and the students became more active “(Should the School Day Start Later?).
