It is five fifty in the morning; your alarm goes off. You try to ignore it, but it keeps making that annoying beeping sound. So, you open your eyes, get up and look out the window, and it’s pitch black. You want to go back to sleep, but you have to catch the bus in less than twenty minutes. You would not mind waking up at five in the morning if your math teacher did not give you so much homework. In this paper, we will go over the pros and cons on why all schools should or should not start later in the morning. School starting at a later time is a pro because it is proven that when students get at least ten hours of sleep or, get a later start to the day, test scores go up and, so does their overall comprehension. A study that included 9,000 high school students conducted by the University of Minnesota found that grades, test scores and overall performance in core subjects advanced significantly when school start times were switched to later hours. (Nea Today) This means students will get more sleep and they won’t be sleep deprived. Also they will be able to fulfill their extra curricular activities Later start times reduced tardiness, truancy and dropout rates. The same study cited above also found that starting the school day at a later time improved school attendance. When students slept adequately, they were less sluggish in the morning and more enthusiastic about going to school. (Master of Arts and Teaching ). Most teens these days are late or tardy to school because of sleeping in late or traffic on the way there. Even though there is really nothing you can do about the traffic sleeping in will no longer be an issue.
