Royalton Block Schedule

Royalton Middle/High School is a small school where I have been enrolled since seventh grade. It has been undergoing some major changes in the last few years including a large addition to the school and a switch in their grading system. Now, the school board is debating on whether Royalton Middle/High School should convert from a block schedule to a seven period schedule. As a student, the switch would have a negative impact on my learning abilities and cause more harm than good. Two reasons why the school should not undergo with the change are less stress on students, and more effective teaching.
Some may argue that during a seven period day students will learn more as a result of having extra classes. In theory this statement is true, but

During the block schedule, students typically receive less homework by not having as many classes in a day. With reduced homework, they undergo less stress, resulting in better sleep and a more attentive learner. It provides them with more time for extracurricular activities, exercise, and a better social life; all components that play a role in a student 's mental and physical health. As a high school athlete, sometimes juggling homework, sports, and a social life becomes overwhelming. So, if Royalton would switch to the seven period day, it would increase homework, and reduce limited social life to almost nothing. Second, the block schedule promotes better time management by making it easier for students to transfer from one class to another. Currently, the junior and senior high have separate passing times throughout the day so the hallways are not crowded between classes. However, if it switches to a seven period day, all passing times would be the same causing major traffic in the halls, locker banks, and bathrooms; producing more tardies, which results in detentions and bad attendance records. For example, if I have a class on the north end of the school and my following class is on the south end, the high traffic in the hallway would make it difficult to travel to my next class on time while stopping at my locker and potentially using the crowded restroom. Last, the block schedule is easier on students by providing a study hall. It gives them a chance to take a break from classes and work on homework, lessening the amount they have after school, especially for those involved in extracurricular activities. For example, while playing baseball for the Royalton Royals, our 2015 season was condensed into the last few weeks from snow on the ball field. So, when it finally dried with

Teachers are here to help students succeed in life and I am grateful for their efforts and impacts they have made. I believe a 4x4 block schedule would help reduce stress that teachers face everyday with grading papers, prep, and student behavior. With only 4 classes each day, the passing times are cut in half compared to a traditional schedule resulting in more time in class rather than in the hallways. Teachers overall will only have to teach 3 classes per day and have a 90 minute prep. This means teachers will have less students to teach at one time.…

The Benefits Year-Round Schooling Since the beginning of time, teaching and learning has been a detrimental part of what makes us able to innovate and experience the world around us. A form of schooling introduced in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s was a year round school system (Pedersen, "The History of School and Summer Vacation"). This system allowed for more days within the learning period and allotted for students to get more out of their education. Research from all the way back to a hundred years ago has shown that students tend to lose information and their footing during a traditional summer vacation (Fairchild, "Why and how communities should focus on summer learning."). The current system most public schools within the…

As for the student, they would be able to have more time to ask questions and fully understand the lesson that is taught to them. The block scheduling system creates specific advantages to students as well. For composition courses, the block schedule would give more opportunities to retake the course if the student fails it the first time. There is more opportunity to take classes earlier as there are more slots to fill by the block schedule, instead of the regular schedule. This would then give more space to retake any kind of class that you might have failed.…

Some high school's districts grappled because the school's sports schedules would be infected by starting the high schools later. That was a central worry to some of the school districts. They came up with an idea that the high school students agreed to shorten the number of minutes they take to get from one class to another, it was called passing time. The result was that high schoolers could start school later but end school at about the same time, without disrupting the athlete's schedules. Teachers especially wanted to change because they were concerned about student's attendance and student's readiness to learn the first period of the day.…

Some people feel discouraged by year-round schooling because they fear children will be tackling multiple activities at once, causing overpowering stress (“The Pros and Cons of Year-Round Schools”). Others, however, feel confident in year-round school because it provides children with a better opportunity to remember the lessons they’ve learned instead of forgetting them over the course of two months. Student athletes often struggle with getting homework assignments completed on game nights. With the 8 Block schedule, student athletes can spend more quality time on their homework rather than competing in a game and then finding time to complete their assignment for the next day. This allows the student to hand in an assignment of better quality. Teachers benefit from this type of schedule as well. The 8 block schedule allows teachers to give immediate feedback on homework without feeling the stress of getting things graded the same night the students hand it in.…

People worldwide are concerned about schools starting too early in the day and have been debating about the benefits of later school start times. Every weekday, students must face the struggle of waking up early to get ready for school without getting enough sleep the night before. Schools starting at a later time during weekdays would allow students to have extra time to sleep in the morning and be more alert and focused. This can result in less sleep-related car accidents and tardies. It can also provide opportunities for students to succeed in school because studies show that alert students are more willing to study and understand concepts than if they were tired.…

This opportunity will help me with time management and concentration, which will prepare me for the most rigorous courses in future. This schedule preserves plenty of free time, which is important because I will be able to develop my character by participating in organizations and pushing myself to come out of my comfort zone. Moreover, in my ideal block experience, I would make genuinely close friends who understand where I come from and accept me for who I am.…

Longer time blocks allow for in depth study, such as individual student projects, peer projects, and work one on one between teacher and students. Teachers can also get a better understanding on different learning styles a student may have. With more teaching time there will be longer cooperative learning activities that can be completed in one class period.
