At first, I was interested in being a school counselor like my mom. I really admired how students would come to her with all kinds of problems and she would listen and offer help. I would often think “How lucky to have someone to talk to, when things appeared hopeless. Many times, friends of mine would come to me and talked about their problems. Like my mom, I felt I have a special gift of listening to people talk about their problems. I would sit and listen with empathy and compassion while trying to figure out “what was the real issues behinds their problems and how I could help them”. Bishop Montgomery high School located in Torrance, CA. is one of most diverse high schools in the South Bay. The students are from different economically and diverse communities. The responsibilities as a coach provides me with one of the first work experiences working with high school teenage girls. Through this experience, I helped individuals improve their skills and helps me analyze player’s behavior on and off the court. While coaches typically focus on the physical side of sport, I became intrigue with the teenage athletes' minds. I could tell if my players were going to have a good practice or game just by how they walk in the gym. I would usually ask how they were doing and I became someone they felt they could vent and talk to. Being an adult outlet they could easily talk to for my players I notice the positive effect it had on their game play. While coaching was the catalyst of my desire to study, and develop skills in psychology, it was not the only experience that lead me to decide that my future endeavors rested in a career where I was helping others.
