The CDC in an article on Stigma and Discrimination said that if a gay or bisexual man is a victim of stigma and or discrimination they are eight times more likely to commit suicide, six times more likely to report high levels of depression, and three times more likely to use illegal drugs and have risky sex (“Stigma...”). One law banning same sex marriage was Proposition 8 in California that was overturned in 2010 because of a pro gay marriage group saying that it was technically invalid because it was a substantive revision rather than an amendment to the California constitution (“Should...”). When the 2004 elections were happening multiple states enacted constitutional amendments against same sex marriage which saw an increase of thirty-seven percent increase in mood disorders, a forty-two percent increase in alcohol disorders, and a 248 percent increase in generalized anxiety disorder in lesbian, gay, and bisexual adults living in states that had the constitutional amendments banning same sex marriage (Mollmann 46).
